My Body, The Bumpersticker

As stated previously I feel strongly about certain issues. Making changes in the world takes commitment, time, energy and money. As I am an armchair traveler (previous post) I am also an armchair activist (sounds like I need to get up.) I write letters, have participated in a peace protest, have become a Baha'i partly for their attention to social issues, etc. I have sported a number of bumperstickers over the years also. The one I have now is "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then we will know peace." But it's possible to use your own body as a bumper. Sometimes people ask me about what my shirt says, often with a comment that they agree with the message. More often people don't take notice or don't care. I don't blame them. Our culture is so bombarded with information and commercials that they probably can't read one more advertisement. That's OK; it's not going to stop me. I do it for myself.... I probably should have titled this post, "The Behavior Of A Lunatic" instead.

An important issue here in SC.

So many domestic animal issues would be non-existent if people would just sterilize their pets.

Alternatives in science refers to the horrific animal experiments and testing that goes on for human benefit. Many organizations (NAVS and AAVS and PCRM) are developing new (equally good) methods to bring about the knowledge without the cruelty.

Save the trees!

One of the reasons some people go vegetarian is for the effect factory farms have on our environment. Many people who call themselves environmentalists stop short when the dinner plate is involved. For example, more environmental damage is done from the raising of cattle (their drinking water, crop erosion and excrement) than from all the watering of plant crops for human consumption and human sewage put together.

One of the biggest social platforms with the Baha'i Faith is racial unity.

Plant another tree and be happy!

Not real sure what this means, but it sounds good.

Self explanatory.

I got so tired of people saying that those who didn't support the war weren't patriotic. I wore this to the peace rally. It's actually from a Baha'i source - see the nine-pointed star behind the peace dove?

Yum. I had this long before the current craze for organic food was so popular.

Although there's a lot of chatter about globalization, I don't see enough activity that truly reflects our respect for others with whom we share the planet. The general motto in this contry is, if I can do it and have the money to do it, why not? I'll tell you why not: we are all connected on the planet TOGETHER. Example: companies that destroy the rainforest for a variety of reasons. Where do you think we get most of our new drugs? From crazy wierd plants in the Amazon Rainforest. Who is that going to hurt one day when there isn't a new antibiotic to counteract MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) ... US! There's a saying attributed to Jesus that sort of goes ... whatever happens to the least of my bretheran happens to me. When are we going to wake up?

Ahhh.. my boyfriend Mohandas. He was certainly not a perfect being, but his compassion towards all life forms sings in my heart. Kind of makes me think of the Michael Vick brouhaha.. I guess the U.S. isn't such a great nation after all.

This is one of the shirts that were so popular in the 80's that would change colors in the sun or with heat. The purple becomes a bright pink. God, how long have I had this shirt?

Actually this used to belong to one of the girls. I don't tend to wear it out in public much!

These bumperstickers that say "God Bless America" really tick me off. Is God not supposed to bless anyone else? The old song of the same name was just a patriotic ditty which I can deal with. But in this era the saying means something totally different.

I'm going to wear this the next time I donate blood or platelets (tee hee hee.)

Why do people feel free to take the skin off of others when they have their own?

Our arctic wildlife are on the road to extinction, if not from global warming from human encroachment.

Obvious.

Another message to take animal cruelty out of science.

I can't understand why people aren't concerned about animal suffering. I guess I shouldn't be surprised... they're not very nice to each other either.

No, I didn't find Saeed at an animal shelter!

Cha Cha Hanging Out With His Grandparents

This weekend Shirin and Anahita came back to Rock Hill for their friend Lisa's wedding shower and bachelorette party. They were pretty much gone all Saturday, so Saeed and I took pity on the poor little doggie who doesn't like to be left out, especially if he's left out alone in the screened-in porch. So up on the deck we went; first was the ice water, then helping with the deck plants, then staring out the gate when he heard his mommy's voice on our answering machine, and then sitting on Saeed's foot just for the hell of it.

On Sunday the girls were exhausted, but managed to fix us all yummy food before crashing in the livingroom. It's a good thing your old-best-friend-since-kindergarten only gets married once.

Hmm.. why did she put ice cubes in my water?
Am I supposed to eat this or drink it?

Helping the yardboy with the plants.

The yardboy finds Cha Cha irresistable!

Waiting for Anahita to appear after hearing her voice on the answering machine.

"I know I heard my mommy's voice.. where is she?"

Smiling for the camera.

The deck is a large area, but apparently the choicest spot for sitting is a human foot.

Post-bachelorette party snoozes, each sporting her own fashionable
permanant marker tatoo from the night before.
(You don't want to know what they say.)

The Four Faces of Ingrid

If you go back to one of Shirin and Gabriel’s early posts they had a lot of fun with a site that matched their faces with celebrities that supposed looked like them(http://www.myheritage.com/FP/Company/tryFaceRecognition.php) and most of us participated in the madness. One of the frequent matches for me is Barbara Stanwyck, movie actress from the golden days. Two others that come up a lot are Holly Hunter and Annie Lennox. I don’t think I look like any of them; people always say I look like Meryl Streep but she never came up once!

Annie Lennox

I found out that Annie Lennox wrote (and sang) the song for the end of the last movie in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (Return of the King.) I really like it.

My Personal DNA Report

Ok, Shirin posted everyone’s results on her website so here’s mine. Saeed says it just means I’m bossy. Hmph. I’ll show him bossy.

Protector Of The Mail

I’m trying to do better in regards to going through the mail on a daily basis. I used to collect a whole desk full (important things pulled aside appropriately of course) but I’ve been doing very well for nearly a year now. As you can see, however, there is a large orange object on today’s mail. It appears to be guarding it against thieves and all manner of threat. I guess the mail will have to wait.

Our vicious mail guard.

Now I realize this appears neither elegant nor comfortable,
but it's one of Obi's favorite positions.

Taking his job seriously, the mail guard now
eyes the daily paper.

Hot Date

Before our exciting trip to Walmart on Sunday we did two things. First we checked to see if the stray cat near the library, Mr. Frisbee, was around. No Mr. Frisbee, but we left more food and water just in case. Then we had our hot date at Moe’s Southwestern Grill. Saeed had the “Joey Bag of Doughnuts” and I had “The Full Monty.” The weather was perfect so we ate outside near the Manchester Village fountain.

Hmmm... where's one with rice?

Saeed, having it his way.

My bubby cooperating for the photographer (for once.)

We couldn’t get over how odd it was that the fountain had engraved virtues surrounding its base. Even more noticeable was the necking teenage couple sitting near the fountain, ignoring some of the virtues (self control and patience) and fully enjoying some of the others (love and joy.) I tastefully chose not to take their picture; disappointed?

I think I'm going to suggest they remove *LOVE* and add *CHASTITY*

Encore, Encore!

In response to Saeed’s comment on the post from earlier today I am adding a few more of Thich Nhat Hanh’s quotes. I’m not sure that will satisfy this particular customer; I believe he wants a treatice. At another time I may be able to provide a link to a lengthier discourse on peace, but the essay itself won’t be posted here. In the days to come there will be quotes from others, quotes that are familiar and famous, and quotes from people I’ve never heard of before.

* Be aware of the contact between your feet and the Earth. Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet. We have caused a lot of damage to the Earth. Now it is time for us to take good care of her. We bring our peace and calm to the surface of the Earth and share the lesson of love. We walk in that spirit.

*The way we live our daily lives is what most effects the situation of the world. If we can change our daily lives, then we can change our governments and can change the world. Our president and governments are us. They reflect our lifestyle and our way of thinking. The way we hold a cup of tea, pick up the newspaper or even use toilet paper are directly related to peace.

* Words and thoughts concerning compassionate action that are not put into practice are like beautiful flowers that are colorful but have no fragrance.

* Seek peace. When you have peace within, real peace with others will be possible.

* WALKING MEDITATION
Take my hand.
We will walk. We will only walk. We will enjoy our walkwithout thinking of arriving anywhere. Walk peacefully. Walk happily. Our walk is a peace walk. Our walk is a happiness walk. Then we learn that there is no peace walk; that peace is the walk; that there is no happiness walk; that happiness is the walk. We walk for ourselves. We walk for everyone always hand in hand. Walk and touch peace every moment. Walk and touch happiness every moment. Each step brings a fresh breeze. Each step makes a flower bloom under our feet. Kiss the Earth with your feet. Print on Earth your love and happiness. Earth will be safe when we feel in us enough safety.

Peace Quotes

As I say in the header at the top of the page I am a lover of peace. Even my cabinet at work has (in addition to a picture of each of our kitties) quotes from the Baha’i Faith about peace.

Below is my cabinet at work.
[There are a few animal rights signs too :-) ]

I suppose I love clever sayings generally, but this topic is particularly close to my heart. In the past I have sported peace bumper stickers, peace T-shirts, and gone to a peace march. I read books about peace, listen to interviews on NPR about peace and read and listen to Thich Nhat Hanh (Vietnamese Buddhist monk) wherever I can find him. Truthfully I’d like to stand up in front of a few million people and tell just exactly what I think about the way our world is going. Since that’s unlikely to happen any time soon I will, from time to time, include a post with a peace quote…. an ineffective action for change but a satisfying form of expression nevertheless.
Venerable Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue, Vietnam.

Thich Nhat Hanh : "We may think of peace as the absence of war, that if the great powers would reduce their weapons arsenals, we could have peace. But if we look deeply into the weapons, we will see our own minds - our own prejudices, fears, and ignorance."

Mr. Nichols Look-Alike

Outside the YC Library is a very nice little natural area for people to sit or swing (swings like on a front porch not swings like on a playground.) The trees in this area are so amazing, sort of like the trees Shirin took pictures of in Cambodia. The branches are vine-like and grow around things and form a lattice-like ceiling over the gazebo beams. Although it was 95 degrees that day it was cool in the protection of these trees.

As I took photographs I noticed the mockingbirds going crazy the way they do when protecting their young. Glancing in the bushes I saw a thin, frightened cat slinking around cautiously. It didn't respond to my cooings, but it didn't run away either. I ran back to my car to get some cat food and water (doesn't everyone have cat food and water in their cars?) and two frisbees from the trunk to use as bowls. By the sound of the mockingbirds as I returned, I knew the kitty was still there. It was obviously frightened of me but lunged into that food within seconds. I talked to it the whole time, hoping it would learn my voice and perhaps respond to it in the future. After it ate all it could, it sort of just sat back and looked at me and caught its breath, content with a full tummy.

Yesterday I drove back there on my lunch break but Mr. Frisbee (I'm calling him a him because of his resemblance to Mr. Nichols) didn't show up. I left him some food and water and hope he found it. Maybe Saeed and I can go back today. Ideally we should capture him to get him fixed, but I'm not sure how the City of Rock Hill would feel about traps placed in the bushes right near City Hall! And realistically I may never see him again. Just in case, I now have more supplies in my car. You never know when you're going have another chance encounter with a hungry little someone.
