Scents Of The Past

Everyone's experienced it, scientists write about it, but I find it incredibly fascinating that I can smell a towel and be transported to another time, another place.

Today after my shower I brought the towel to my face and the smell of that towel took me back 45 years to the DG pool. I could see the pool in front of me, I could smell the fresh air and the scent of the towel as the noises of the other swimmers filled my ears, or at least seemed to. The sensation hit me with such clarity that I was shocked. How many times had I brought a towel to my face (365 days x 45 years = 16,425 times) and not had that experience? Why today? The brain is an amazing and complicated organ.
